Passat Estate BlueMotion Mk VI

First seen by the public at the Geneva Show 2005, and on sale in the UK from June 2005, the sixth generation Passat saloon raised standards in its sector once again. The Estate model followed shortly after, going on sale in November that year. The first Passat BlueMotion models became available to UK customers in January 2008.

Since its introduction in 1973, the Passat has established a reputation for quality in the medium car market, a lead that successive Passat models have maintained and a challenge that all new models have been developed to meet.

The Passat is one of the most spacious vehicles in its class and its appearance is designed to rival the appearance of more expensive cars. Elements of the flagship Phaeton are apparent, with elements such as distinctive circular LED tail lights, a bolder grille and more coupé-like profile.

Technological highlights include standard fitment of an electronic parking brake, DSG twin-clutch transmission and the availability of a ten-channel 600 watt sound system developed in conjunction with Danish hi-fi specialists, Dynaudio.

The Passat and Passat Estate ranges were updated at the end of 2009 with the introduction of the Highline Plus, which joined the S, R Line, Highline and R36 trim levels. Available on entry-level S, Highline and Highline Plus trims, an economical and low-CO2 emitting variant is available and designated ‘BlueMotion Technology’. From now on, only the very lowest emitting and most economical cars in the range (for example, the Passat and Passat Estate at 114 g/km) will be known simply as ‘BlueMotion’.

Passat and Passat Estate BlueMotion Technology

The Passat BlueMotion Technology combines efficiency with comfort and equipment to create a vehicle that delivers greater economy and fewer emissions, yet performs and appears like any other Volkswagen product.

On the S trim, it is available with a 1.6-litre common rail TDI engine developing 105 PS, while the Highline and Highline Plus use a 2.0-litre common rail TDI 140 PS. All feature several systems and modifications to optimise efficiency including a Start / Stop system, multifunction computer providing visual gear change recommendation for optimum fuel consumption and a regenerative braking system which charges the battery while the vehicle is in motion to reduce the workload of the engine and cut fuel consumption. Alloy wheels fitted with low rolling resistance tyres enhance economy further.

Passat and Passat Estate BlueMotion

The Passat BlueMotion, available in both saloon and Estate guises, is the most fuel efficient production Passat ever built, achieving 64.2 mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 114 g/km of CO2 . Using the same 1.6-litre 105 PS common rail diesel engine as the Passat S BlueMotion Technology, the Passat BlueMotion features a unique body styling kit and lowered suspension to improve aerodynamics, along with revised gearing to help improve fuel consumption. The result is a competitively-priced vehicle that will match or beat hybrids currently available in the UK market while being conventional to drive, service and maintain.

BLUEMOTION HISTORY

The first model to be offered with a BlueMotion badge was the Polo BlueMotion which was launched in the UK in September 2007. With a combined fuel consumption figure of 74.3 mpg and a carbon dioxide emissions figure of just 99 g/km, it quickly became recognised as a popular choice for those wanting a conventional, practical, stylish and affordable car with class-leading CO2 performance. Showing how the technology has developed, these impressive figures are now matched by the new Golf BlueMotion.

With the latest Polo, Golf and Passat BlueMotion models, which emit just 91, 99 and 114 g/km of CO2respectively, ‘BlueMotion’ will continue to describe the most fuel and CO2 efficient models in the entire range.

BLUEMOTION TECHNOLOGY

A new range of vehicles has been developed by Volkswagen that strike a balance between the highly focussed BlueMotion vehicles and the conventional products on which they are based. The range, carrying the ‘BlueMotion Technology’ badge, combines efficiency with comfort and equipment to create vehicles that deliver greater economy and produce fewer emissions yet perform and appear like any other Volkswagen product.

The breadth of Volkswagen’s most efficient range continues to grow and offer increased cost benefits. With a BlueMotion Technology variant currently available on Golf, Golf Plus, Passat, Passat Estate, Eos, Touran, Sharan, Tiguan and Touareg, there is a model to suit most requirements.

ENGINES

1.6-litre, 1598 cc TDI CR, 16-valve 4-cyl, 105 PS

The Passat BlueMotion Technology and Passat BlueMotion models are both fitted with a 1.6-litre common rail TDI engine producing 105 PS at 4,400 rpm with maximum torque of 185 lbs ft (250 Nm) from 1,500 rpm and linked to a five-speed manual gearbox. The engine features special electronic mapping to reduce the idle speed and optimise the engine for economy. The 0 to 62 mph sprint for both is completed in 12.4 seconds and top speed is 120 mph.

The Passat BlueMotion Technology achieves 62.8 mpg on the combined cycle and emits 118 g/km of CO2(119 Estate) while, with emissions of 114 g/km and a combined fuel economy figure of 64.2 mpg, the Passat BlueMotion is the most efficient production Passat and capable of more than 775 miles on one tank of fuel.

2.0-litre, 1968 cc TDI CR, 16-valve 4-cyl, 140 PS

Available on the Passat BlueMotion Technology Highline and Highline Plus models, the 2.0-litre TDI common rail engine produces 140 PS at 4,200 rpm and 236 lbs ft (320 Nm) of torque at 1,750 rpm. Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, this engine accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 131 mph. Fuel consumption remains competitive with a combined figure of 60.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 124 g/km (127 Estate).

All models are fitted with an oxidation catalyst and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) as standard to reduce oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter almost to zero, while a variable geometry turbocharger provides high levels of torque from just above idling speed.

FEATURES

Aerodynamics

The Passat BlueMotion is fitted with a sports styling kit to improve aerodynamics and boost efficiency as well as to distinguish this model from others in the range. The efficienct aerodynamic styling kit comprises sports bumpers, side skirts and front body-coloured inserts.

Both the Passat BlueMotion and Passat BlueMotion Technology models are fitted with alloy wheels and low rolling resistance tyres. The Passat BlueMotion also features sports suspension, lowered by approximately 15 mm at the front and 8 mm at the rear, improving aerodynamics and reducing drag further.

Regenerative braking

A regenerative braking system is applied to all Passat BlueMotion and Passat BlueMotion technology models. The system is designed to help utilise energy that would otherwise be lost during braking.

In deceleration and braking phases, the alternator’s voltage is boosted and used for bulk recharging of the car’s battery. Thanks to alternator control, it is possible to lower alternator voltage, for example during deceleration or driving at constant speed. It is even possible to switch off the alternator entirely which reduces engine load and improves fuel consumption.

Start / Stop

Both the Passat BlueMotion and Passat BlueMotion Technology models feature an automatic Start / Stop system, operated through the clutch pedal. When coming to a halt at traffic lights, for example, the driver depresses the clutch and selects neutral. When the clutch is released, the engine shuts down and a ‘Start / Stop’ symbol illuminates on the multifunction display. In order to move away, the driver simply depresses the clutch once again to select first gear and the engine restarts automatically. The system can be deactivated through a switch, if necessary.
