Karmann Ghia history

1955 Ghia-styled two-plus-two coupé with two functional air intake openings in the front panel for improved cockpit ventilation. Traditional Beetle drivetrain with rear-mounted 30 bhp 1192 cc air-cooled flat-four engine bolted to four-speed swing-axle transaxle with syncromesh on top three ratios.
1957 Redesigned dashboard with fuel gauge located between speedo and clock. New steering wheel with semi-circular horn ring.
1958 Cabriolet launched.
1959 Front wings redesigned to raise headlamp height. Front air intake grilles enlarged. From August, right-hand-drive versions of both coupé and cabriolet launched.
1961 Engine uprated to 34 bhp; transmission now all syncromesh.
1966 1285 cc engine now available with 40 bhp; plus redesigned front suspension with ball joints in place of king and link pins.
1967 New 44 bhp 1493 cc engine installed across the range. Disc front brakes with dual circuits fitted for the first time.
1968 Optional semi-automatic ‘stickshift’ transmission introduced.
1971 50 bhp 1584 cc engine with separate inlet ports. New wraparound front indicators and larger rear light clusters introduced.
1972 Matt-black dashboard and new ‘safety’ steering wheel fitted. ‘Euro’ bumpers fitted to meet US safety regulations.
1974 Production ceases on June 21.
