VOLKSWAGEN UK ASSISTS LONDON AMBULANCE SERVICE WITH TIGUAN TECH UPDATES

Jul 8, 2020

  • London Ambulance Service required upgrades to five Tiguan vehicles
  • Five separate Volkswagen Retailers were happy to assist
  • Upgrade was installed for free, with as little down-time as possible

Milton Keynes – The Volkswagen UK Retailer Network has assisted with a request from the London Ambulance Service to retrofit App-Connect free-of-charge to five of its vehicles during the lockdown period, while keeping this invaluable public service’s vehicles off the road for as little time as possible.

Five Volkswagen Tiguan emergency responder vehicles used by the London Ambulance Service now have App-Connect installed thanks to the swift work of the Volkswagen Retailer Network. The Volkswagen App-Connect allows an Apple or Android smartphone to be connected to the vehicle and compatible apps to appear on the infotainment display via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It means responders can make use of the latest mapping apps and traffic data on their smartphone without the need to replace the hardware in the vehicle for the rest of its life in service.

All five of the emergency responder vehicles were based in separate areas of London, and therefore each visited a separate Retailer – most convenient to each location – in order to carry out the upgrade. Each vehicle’s upgrade was completed in around 30 minutes, ensuring that all five were back in action promptly, and off the road for as little time as possible.

Motorline Volkswagen Coulsdon, Lookers Volkswagen Battersea, Citygate Volkswagen Twickenham, Alan Day Volkswagen New Southgate and Marshall Volkswagen Loughton all undertook the work – which was provided free of charge – for the ambulance service.

The upgrade programme provided by Volkswagen and its retailer partners was a small gesture of gratitude to the emergency services, which have played a hugely important role during the pandemic. When the request to further improve the operation of these vehicles was made, Volkswagen UK was only too happy to provide free-of-charge assistance.

The London Ambulance Service was established in 1965, before becoming a fully-fledged NHS trust in 1996, although London has had an operative ambulance service since the 1870s. With around 500 ambulances and 70 response cars, the London Ambulance Service today covers the whole of Greater London, as defined by political boundaries, and handles between 35-45,000 calls every week.

Chris Hartley-Sharpe, Head of Volunteer Responders at London Ambulance Service, said: “This technical support from Volkswagen will make a real difference, helping our brilliant volunteers to lead an effective and professional emergency response.

“The response team would not exist without generous donations of resources and equipment like those from Volkswagen, and generous donations of time and expertise from our volunteers. It is a fantastic example of people from all walks of life coming together to help their fellow Londoners in times of need.”

Andrew Savvas, Volkswagen UK Managing Director, said: “Being just a phone call away and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it’s easy to forget that ambulances and emergency responder vehicles need regular maintenance, and never has the need been greater for these vehicles to be in peak condition and ready to act as quickly as possible as in recent times. We were very happy to help the heroes of the London Ambulance Service with these upgrades.”
