Milton Keynes, UK – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles customer Allan Ritchie is celebrating a bronze medal at the 2019 Para Trap Shooting World Championship after his converted Volkswagen Caravelle helped afford him the freedom to train and compete.

Allan, 50, from Aberdeen, suffered a spinal injury in 2014 but since taking delivery of his wheelchair-accessible Volkswagen Caravelle in 2016, he’s been on a journey to shooting glory.

Having discovered he had an eye for shooting, Allan began taking part in competitions, using his Caravelle to travel to tournaments across the UK and Europe. Last month, with the Caravelle safely in the airport car park, he won bronze at the 2019 Para Trap Shooting World Championship in Australia.

Allan said: “I’m delighted to come back with a medal and it was a great experience to shoot against the best in the world. My Caravelle has given me complete independence to be able to travel to events over the past few years. It would not have been possible in any other vehicle. I absolutely love it.”

The Caravelle Executive 2.0-litre TDI model has been a trusty companion for Allan since being converted by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Recognised Converter, Lewis Reed to fit his specialist requirements.

An automatic tailgate and loading ramp are fitted which can be remotely operated while a six-way transfer seat allows Allan access to the driver seat direct from his wheelchair completed unaided. Hand controls on the steering wheel allow Allan to drive on his own - although the Caravelle still retains regular pedals should anyone else wish to drive.

Nick Axtell, Specialist Sales Manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “It’s great to hear about Allan’s medal success and to see how important the Caravelle has been in supporting his journey. As part of our Working With You promise, and in partnership with our Recognised Converters, we are committed to providing our customers with vans that suit their needs however complex and specific they may be.”

The Caravelle SE and Executive both offer superb levels of specification and trim along with a choice of petrol or diesel engines. The six-speed manual gearbox can be operated via an easy-to-reach, dash-mounted gear lever or customers can opt for the convenience of the seven-speed, Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). There is also the option of two different wheelbases on the SE. The Caravelle comes with three wheelchair seating options; front, middle or rear.
