polo fsi ' direct injection for better performance and economy

The introduction of the 1.4-litre, 86 PS FSI engine to the Polo marks the first use of this new direct-injection petrol technology by Volkswagen in the UK market.  FSI uses stratified direct injection in a similar manner to that employed in TDI technology, and will gradually be introduced to other models in the Volkswagen range.

The fuel is injected into the combustion chamber at a pressure of 100 bar.  The reduced consumption of the FSI engine is achieved by stratification in the low and medium speed ranges.  Direct petrol injection is used to control precisely the quantity of fuel injected and the fuel spray pattern, which brings the petrol engine closer to the efficiency of the diesel.  Compared with other petrol engines of equivalent power, it can provide an improvement of around 15 per cent to fuel consumption.

Another benefit of this new engine technology is the efficient exhaust treatment of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) through a special catalytic converter.

The result is improved performance and efficiency.  At 3500 rpm, the engine produces 96 lbs ft of torque, while the combined fuel consumption figure is 47.9 mpg.  Carbon dioxide emissions of just 142 g/km put the Polo FSI in the lowest company car tax bracket.

The FSI engine is available in SE and Sport trim with either three or five doors, spanning from £11,020 to £12,230.  Both models feature remote central locking, ABS and four airbags, while the Sport adds 15" alloy wheels; sports seats and sports suspension; front fog lights; plus a multifunction computer and a CD autochanger.

FSI technology will deliver immediate benefits on standard quality petrol but, due to the way in which it works to reduce NOx emissions, it will provide even further reductions in fuel consumption when sulphur-free petrol (containing a maximum of 10 ppm of sulphur) is gradually phased into Britain during this year.
