Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Alès electrified – Volkswagen presents spectacular prototype for Pikes Peak: The I.D. R

A murmur went round the specialist audience when Volkswagen unveiled the spectacular I.D. R Pikes Peak in front of representatives of the media in Alès (France). The 500-kW (680-hp), fully-electric prototype for the iconic hill climb on Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs (USA) features a clever balance between power, battery capacity and performance, and lightweight design. The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak now embarks on a very intense test programme before the big day on 24 June 2018, when the super sports car will attempt to break the existing record for electric cars.

Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand

“Volkswagen’s goal is to lead the way in electromobility with the I.D. family. As such, Volkswagen’s involvement on Pikes Peak not only points the way for our motorsport future, but is also of great symbolic significance.”

More trophies for the collection: Extremely successful GTC weekend for Volkswagen

Volkswagen enjoyed its most successful weekend to date in the Global Touring Cars series in South Africa: Jetta GTC driver Daniel Rowe (ZA) triumphed for the first time at round two of the championship, which was held at the Killarney Raceway to the north of Cape Town. Keagan Masters claimed two commanding victories in a Golf GTI in the GT2 category. As such, three of the four winner’s trophies went to Volkswagen teams.

Round three of the Global Touring Cars series in South Africa will take place in Zwartkops on 12 May.

Daniel Rowe, Volkswagen Jetta GTC #89

“It feels fantastic to have got my first GTC victory under my belt. Once I had overtaken three of my rivals from fourth on the grid, I was able to focus on opening a nice lead.”

Jeffrey Kruger in a league of his own in Cape Town – Two race wins from pole position

It doesn’t get any better than this: Jeffrey Kruger dominated round two of the Volkswagen Polo Cup South Africa. Although the top 15 drivers were separated by just one second in qualifying – including the individual timed laps – Kruger not only secured pole position with the newly-developed one-make cup Polo for South Africa, but went on to convert pole into victory in both races. As such, Kruger was the dominant force in what are otherwise fiercely-competitive races. Charl Wilken and Clinton Bezuidenhout completed the podium in the opening race, with Tasmin Pepper and Jonathan Mogotsi finishing second and third in race two. In finishing runner-up, Tasmin Pepper also set a new lap record for the cup Polo at the Killarney Raceway.

Zwartkops, near Pretoria, will host round three of the Volkswagen Polo Cup South Africa on 12 May.
